New Zealand is an island country in the south-western Pacific Ocean. Its is comprised of two main land masses - the North Island and the South Island. Notable for its geographic isolation, New Zealand is situated about 2,000 km or about 1250 miles southeast of Australia across the Tasman Sea. It's closest neighbors to the north are New Caledonia, Fiji and Tonga. During its long isolation, New Zealand developed a distinctive fauna dominated by birds, many of which have became extinct after the arrival of humans and the mammals they introduced.
The majority of New Zealand's population consists of European descent. The largest minority are the indigenous Māori. Asians and non-Māori Polynesians are also significant minority groups, especially in urban areas. The most commonly spoken language is English.
New Zealand is a ranks highly in international comparisons in areas such as, education, economic freedom, and lack of corruption. Its cities also consistently rank among the world's most liveable.
The country's head of state is Elizabeth II, the Queen of New Zealand and is represented by a Governor-General who holds reserve powers. They rarely exercise any power without the advice of the Cabinet. Legislative political power is held by the democratically elected Parliament of New Zealand, and executive political power is effectively exercised by the Prime Minister and the rest of the Cabinet.
